Year 4 Poetry, by Mrs Hover
Date: 12th Apr 2017 @ 7:19pm
Year 4's poetry inspired by the list poem, 'I come from...' by Robert Seatter
I come from…
(verses taken from some of the children’s poems)
I come from Chester, a busy city
Full of people
Friends and foes
Dotted around like landmarks on a map
Each leading different lives in different way
I come from the smell of cookies baking
The sweet scent wafting through the kitchen door
As the cookies turn golden and crisp
While the oven heats up
I come from the joy of finishing an amazing book
Silently reading somewhere in a corner
As the words come to life
And I get lost in worlds of my own…
I come from Florida full of adventure and magic
Where all your dreams come true
A swimming pool for a back garden
A theme park
Two water parks
Ice cream for breakfast…
Roller coasters everyday
Waves so powerful, they could knock you out
I come from part Scottish and part English
And wearing my first kilt at a wedding…
I come from a loving, fantastic family
Who love getting muddy and dirty
Going for walks with the dog
And getting sprayed by him
I come from hot holidays in Spain
And yummy, sugary doughnuts on the beach
I come from water fights with my sisters
And the smell of the roast dinner on Christmas Eve
I come from Trick or Treating around the streets on Halloween
And getting up early on Easter morning
Looking around for Easter eggs
I come from giggling and kindness
And spending time with my family
On special occasions
I come from popcorn and the cinema
Candy floss, the colour of the rainbow
Melting in my mouth…
I come from the library
And books scattered in a messy pile
Beside my desk

'Ancient Greek Theatre Mask' inspired clay work, by Mrs Hover
Date: 15th Feb 2017 @ 8:13pm
After researching and looking at different theatre masks from Ancient Greece, the children drew several of their favourite designs in their sketchbooks. Next, they chose one design and created a more detailed charcoal drawing, which they then sculpted out of clay.
All of Year 4's clay work is currently displayed in the space in front of the main entrance door.
Children's Mental Health Week 2017 - Year 4, by Mrs Hover
Date: 10th Feb 2017 @ 6:37am
On Tuesday, Year 4 began by creating mind-maps based on everything they knew about different feelings. We then played 'Feelings Bingo' and discovered that there were lots more feelings that we hadn't thought about. As we ticked off our Bingo cards, the children gave thought-provoking examples of when people might feel happy, excited, OK, proud, lonely, angry, grumpy, scared...
Next, we read one of Mrs Hover's favourite books, 'The Tear Thief' by Carol Ann Duffy. (The Tear Thief takes away children's tears and, in doing so lessens the causes of them).
We discussed why the children were crying and what could have helped them feel better.
"The tears were jewels inside the darkness of the sack clinking and chinking and winking. Tears of rage were red and glowed like rubies. Tears of envy or jealousy were as green as emeralds. Tears of self-pity were turqoise. Scared tears were white like moonstones and guilty tears were amber."
Finally, we worked in friendship groups acting out scenarios based on 'not so good feelings' and discussed what could have been said or done to make the characters feel better.

Year 4’s ‘Awareness Video’ about Sumatran Tigers, by Mrs Hover
Date: 19th Dec 2016 @ 8:49pm
Please look at our video called, ‘Would it be OK…?’ about the plight of Sumatran Tigers. They are critically endangered and we wanted to educate people so this beautiful animal doesn’t become extinct. We worked in pairs thinking about the ‘voice’ of the tiger and then created powerful questions based upon their threats.
Year 4 - Animals in Captivity, by Mrs Hover
Date: 7th Dec 2016 @ 8:38pm
In Literacy, we read the poem ‘My Mother Saw a Dancing Bear’ by Charles Causley. Then, we used noun phrases, expanded noun phrases and powerful verbs to describe the life of a dancing bear and the life of a bear living in its natural habitat (David Attenborough film clip). Finally, we wrote from the viewpoint of the ‘dancing bear’.

Year 4 Drama, by Mrs Hover
Date: 25th Nov 2016 @ 8:30pm
WALT use drama to explore animal extinction and animals living in captivity
Today we moved on to look at animals because animals were traditionally used in circuses. In an exciting drama lesson with Mrs Baillie, we explored the movement and posture of different jungle animals creating ‘The Futuristic Museum of Extinct Animals’. Next, we created ‘The Live Jungle’ soundscape where we started off as trees and then some children changed into animals, whilst other children became poachers. Canes were used by the poachers to create a cage and the trapped animals were given ‘human voices’ to describe how they would be feeling.

European Day of Languages, by Mrs Hover
Date: 29th Sep 2016 @ 6:47am
On Monday 26th September, Year 4 spent the morning celebrating 'European Day of Languages'. Activities included using atlases to find the outline of different European countries and matching countries to their flags. In groups, the children researched either Scotland, Germany, Italy, Spain or Poland looking at capital cities, population, famous landmarks, food... creating an information board on their findings. They then presented their European countries to the rest of the class.
On Tuesday, the children thoroughly enjoyed learning some Polish from Franek. Franek taught us lots of words, read to us in Polish and shared some tongue twisters which were really funny!
Circus pictures - Leon and the Place Between, by Mrs Hover
Date: 15th Sep 2016 @ 8:43pm
Our classroom was transformed into a circus! There was music, incense, fairy lights, popcorn, candyfloss, images of the ‘Big Top’, acrobats, clowns, a white rabbit coming out of a top hat, a ringmaster, clowns on stilts and a lot more! In groups we wrote down what we could see, hear, smell and taste using expanded noun phrases.

Year 4 Beeston, by Mr Brown
Date: 16th May 2016 @ 12:09pm
On Monday we walked along the Sandstone Trail from Beeston to Burwardsley. At Burwardsley we made clay pots, string just like the people from the Iron Age did. We were archaeologists, digging for artefacts, finding out about the past. The Roundhouse we explored was made as a replica using the same type of tools used in the Iron Age.
