Y5 children working on an exciting writing project with Antony Lishak

Class: Year 5 Year: 2016 - 2017

What gift will you use to ignite the world?

Our Year 5 children have enjoyed working with Antony Lishak today on an exciting writing project. Mr Lishak is an author who writes fiction, non-fiction and historical stories. He has given us some of the books that he has written - one called Stars about people risking their lives to save others. It took him 8 years to research this book.

We asked him some questions to find out a bit more about him.

Where do you do your writing?

He has a writing shed. Sometimes he writes on paper, sometimes on the computer, sometimes he plans it out in his head. He is always thinking about possible story opportunities.

Where do you get your inspiration for writing from?

From everyday life. He believes we all have the ability to create stories in our head and if we listen to our imagination we'll be amazed at what stories we'll find.

He loves starting the story in a way that makes the reader stop and react, feeling that they desperately want to read more.

Which of the books that you've written is your favourite?

Stars. His second favourite is Henry's Boots.

How many books have you written?

Well over 100 - although he's only had 30 pubished. His message is, don't give up! If you want to be an author, persevere.

How old were you when you wrote your first book?

6 years of age - according to his mother!

Mr Lishak introduced the project, encouraging us to develop our ideas on what is important to us and consider how we can improve our world in light of this. Over the next few weeks we will be writing about these ideas and once our written work is completed he will put our pieces into a book, along with work completed by other children in neighbouring schools.

Topical issues written about today included war, homelessness, hunger, animal cruelty, global warming and poor educational opportunities.
