Year 3 - Safer Internet Day 2019 , by Miss Jones

Date: 5th Feb 2019 @ 6:08pm

Year 3 have had a wonderful afternoon completing a carousel of activities about staying safe online. Our activities included sorting statements into fact and opinion so that we are able to spot fake news online. We also completed a quiz to understand what information is safe to share online. Another activity involved writing rules and top tips for keeping safe online and sorting true and false facts about internet usage. Finally, we read a story about Buddy the Dog  and how we could stay safe when using tablets. Buddy taught us a song. Why not ask the children to sing it to you at home?

Sharing homework in Year 3, by Miss Jones

Date: 1st Feb 2019 @ 9:00pm

Year 3 have been very busy at home over the past 2 weeks. As part of our English text, Escape from pompeii, the children had to research the events in Pompeii, 79AD. Children used the internet, trips to the library, videos and even song lyrics to gather their information.  They then presented their research in a variety of ways.  We had lift the flap peters, posters made on the computer, leaflets with glossaries, speeches, story writing, fact files and PowerPoint presentations. It was brilliant to see the children use features that we have looked at in English and guided reading.

Year 3 visitors , by Miss Jones

Date: 27th Nov 2018 @ 12:21pm

Year 3 have been very lucky to have had two visitors into the classroom this week. Last Tuesday, Mr Trevor visited the class to deliver a workshop about the Stone Age. The children were fabulous at asking and answering historical questions. It was a perfect opportunity for them to show Mr Trevor what they have learnt during their English and topic lessons. I was very proud  of the children and amazed at just how much they could remember from lessons.

This Tuesday, we welcomed a ladycalled Marissa from Chester zoo . She tasked to us about the importance of looking after our planet by recycling and reducing plastic waste. The children were shocked to learn just how long it takes for certain materials to rot after they are thrown in the bin. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle 😀

Year 3 - cooking a fruity Stone Age pudding. , by Miss Jones

Date: 5th Oct 2018 @ 1:44pm

This week, we cooked like a Stone Age person and made delicious stewed fruit using ingrediants we predicted they would have used in the Stone Age. We wrote up the recipe and a set of instructions using imperative verbs and adverbs for when and how. We even worked out the total cost for the recipe.

We talked about how they might have foraged and gathered fruits like plums and blackberries and nuts and seeds. To make our pudding sweet, we used honey becuse there was no sugar in the Stone Age.

If you would like to make it at home, I have uploaded the recipe.

Year 3 - Roald Dahl Day 🐊🦒🍫, by Miss Jones

Date: 15th Sep 2018 @ 7:28am

We had a great time celebrating Roald Dahl Day on Thursday 13th September. In English, we practised skim reading; reading to find key bits of information within a text and made notes all about Roald Dahl’s life. We then turned our notes into full sentences to add to our biography poster all about our Author of the Month, Roald Dahl.

We also enjoyed practising representing 3-digit numbers in different ways. We used  the number of pages in some of Roald Dahl’s most Famous books as our starting number.

The children also really enjoyed discovering their Roald Dahl name. This is displayed on our window. I wonder what your Roald Dahl name would be? Why not have a look the next time you are outside our classroom.

Year 3 - Art and Design , by Miss Jones

Date: 15th Sep 2018 @ 7:17am

This week, the children have been investigating cave paintings. We used the iPads to research facts about Stone Age cave art and to get a closer look at some paintings. They also used a range of different art media to sketch on different papers, specifically experimenting with tone and texture. Next, as a class we looked at how we could design our own cave art inspired line drawing to make a tile for press printing. The children worked very hard creating their own unique design for their printing. We used ink and the repeated printing techniques to create new covers for our topic books. The final results were wonderful!

Year 3 - Our First Week, by Miss Jones

Date: 11th Sep 2018 @ 10:49am

What a busy week we have had!

Mrs Woodward, Mrs Woodington and Miss Jones are very impressed with how quickly the children have settled into Year 3. The children also brought in at least one special item of their’s and talked about so that Miss Jones could get to know them. We enjoyed getting to know Miss Jones during a quiz and when she shared her all about me bag. We even saw a photo of her when she was in Year 3!

We also talked about our School Values at Oldfield and made a class display for CARE - Can your child tell you what each letter strands for. We learnt the new School Rules and made a sign for our door. Every child signed each rule with their finger print too.

On Friday, the children enjoyed a Golden Time afternoon with Mrs Bailey and tried out their new activities rota. Can you remember what activities we have this term?

The chlidren earn Golden Time each week if they manage to keep all of their NOISE letters.

I wonder what we will do next week?

Should animals live in zoos? , by Miss Jones

Date: 12th Mar 2018 @ 11:31pm

Today we read an article about whether animals should be kept in zoos. We came across some tricky words so to help us learn the meanings, we played a word, pictures and definition matching game.

Following on from our work on Komodo dragons and inspired by the books ‘Zoo’ by Anthony Browne, Year 3 have raised the question: should animals be kept in zoos? We have had lots of debate and passionate discussions around whether animals in captivity are happy or would they be happier in their natural habitat. We have been learning about the importance of valuing other people’s opinions, even if they are different to our own. We have also learnt what a balanced argument is and have looked at reasons for and against zoos.

The children have had had some excellent discussions and have practised using debating techniques and phrases in a group and whole-class debate. This has led the children to form their own opinions about whether animals should be kept in zoos. This week, the children will practise their persuasive writing and design posters or write persuasive paragraphs to inform people about the reasons for or against animals living in captivity.

World Book Day in Year 3, by Miss Jones

Date: 12th Mar 2018 @ 11:12pm

Year 3 really enjoyed reading with the Year 6 children on World Book Day. They read to each other and shared some of their favourite books. The children’s discussions and the feedback given to one another was wonderful to hear.

The children also enjoyed hearing a poem, story extract or a tongue twister on the hour, every hour. In the afternoon, we did an emoji quiz to try and guess the name of a well-known children’s story from emojis. They children did very well!

Check out our gallery for some examples from the quiz and try to guess the story title.

Year 3 - Number Chase (Maths of the Day), by Miss Jones

Year 3 Science , by Miss Jones

Date: 2nd Feb 2018 @ 1:42pm

Year 3 have been working very hard on their rocks topic in science and they would like to show you some of their most recent investigations.

The 'Choc' Cycle

To help the children understand how each different type of rock is formed, we used chocolate to speed up the rock cycle. Melted chococlate represented igneous rock being formed underground from magma and lava. We then grated the chocolate to show the effects of weathering and how rocks break up into bits of sediment. Next, we layered the different sediment on top of each other to represent the formation of sedimentary rock. Finally, we used pressure and heat from our hands and squeezed the sedimentary rock to show how metamorphic rock is formed. The children recorded their observations as we went and they were able to use the correct scientific vocabularly.

Fossils

On Tuesday, the children looked at images of fossils and discovered four different types; trace fossils, body fossils, cast fossils and mold fossils. The children made excellent information posters about each fossil before making their very own mold fossil! These are currently drying out but once they are dry, the children will be able to take their fossils home.
