Inter Schools Rounders Tournament, by Mrs Percival

On Monday a group of Y5 and Y6 children attended the Chester schools Rounders tournament in which over 20 teams took part. Our team won 3 out of their 4 matches and narrowly missed the semi-finals by one point. What we were most impressed with was their team spirit and sportsmanship, they were a real credit to Oldfield.

PTA Bake Sale

Thank you so much to everyone who supported our cake sale by contributing and / or buying cakes at the end of the school day. What an incredibly creative array of designs there were on the theme of Celebration! A total of £290.30 was raised, all of which will go towards PTA funded projects. A special thank you to Catherine Golightly and her team of volunteers for organising and running the event. 

 

Gymnastics, by Miss Young

During the Spring 2 term, Year 6 have been partaking in Gymnastics sessions with the main focus being 'team work'. They've used their own body weight to support one another and also ensure they communicate effectively when problem solving. 

Evolution and Inheritance, by Miss Young

Year 6 have started to explore 'Evolution and Inheritance' in our Science lessons. 

We used our arm span as a measure of time, beginning with the Big Bang bringing us to the Present day.

Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed their first session with Asling and the opportunity to hear our song 'Just Believe', attached for you to sing along and practise at home- https://amasing.org.uk/project/just-believe/

 

We were then joined by Alex and James from Amasing and loved their drums workshop. 

World Book Day with Buddies, by Miss Young

Year 6 shared their favourite books, along with recommended reads to encourage one another to pick up a book that they'd not explored before. 

We also selected an eBook from the WBD website- https://www.worldbookday.com/world-of-stories/, having read the blurbs and decided which one appealed to us. Robin Hood: Hacking, Heists and Flaming Arrorws proved the most popular. 

After lunch we visited our Reception buddies and shared our favourite books with them, before reading their favourite book aloud to them. 

Musical Performance, by Miss Young

Year 6 have been practising their singing and glockenspeil playing to 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams. They then shared this experience with Reception who joined for a recital and were very complimentary. 

The Selfish Giant's Supper, by Miss Young

Following on from our English unit on The Selfish Giant, Year 6 designed, made and then evaluated a 3 course menu created for the Selfish Giant. 

 

The recipes and ingrediants are as follows:

Pizza Muffins (gluten free)

  • serves 30

500g self-raising flour

2tsps of mixed herbs

230g butter

500ml milk

4 eggs

4tbsp tomato pizza sauce

230g of shredded cheese

3 red peppers

2 tins of sweetcorn

 

Preheat the oven to 190?.

Mix the flour and mixed herbs in a bowl.

Separately, mix the butter (melted), milk, eggs and pizza sauce in a jug.

Combine the egg mixture into the flour mixture and lightly stir together.

Then fold in the cheese.

Spoon the mixture into muffin cases.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden-brown.

 

Chicken Rice Salad (*vegetarian option)

  • serves 30

1 whole cucumber

1 lettuce head

2 lemons

600g cherry tomatoes

1kg (4 packets) microwave rice

1kg (4 packets) cooked chicken

*250g (1 packet) Quorn pieces

 

Chop all vegetables and pre-cooked chicken (Quorn pieces) into bite-sized pieces.

Slight tear the packet rice and cook for 2-3 minutes in the microwave.

In a bowl, combine the rice, chicken/ Quorn pieces and vegetables.

Mix well and season with a squeeze of lemon juice and salt and pepper.

 

Brownies (gluten free)

  • serves 30

195g cocoa powder

900g caster sugar

345g self-raising flour

525g butter

9 eggs

3tsp vanilla extract

 

Preheat the oven to 180?.

Grease a shallow cake tin with oil.

Mix the butter (melted) and coco powder until dissolved.

Stir in the sugar.

Lightly beat the eggs and vanilla together.

Beat half the egg mixture into the cocoa.

Add the remaining mixture, mixing until smooth.

Combine with the flour and mix until smooth.

Pour the mixture into the cake tin, spreading evenly.

Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until well risen and lightly cracked around the edges.

Sportshall Athletics, by Miss Young

Each member of the Year 6 team represented Oldfield at the Sportshall Athletics tournament against 15 other school within Cheshire. Their cooperation and perserverance was demonstrated by all and they made us very proud.

Year 6 took part in a class secret Santa, we were all delighted to receive such kind and thoughtful gifts from our peers. 

Our Bodies, by Miss Young

We outlined the human body before annotating it with the digestive and skeletal along with our vital organs. 

Using our knowledge of the circulatory system, we used beanbags to represent deoxygenated and oxygenated body that was being transported around the body to our circulatory system. 

In pairs, we created and presented presentations on 'How Can We Stay Healthy?'. 

Cheshire Phoenix Hoops4Health, by Miss Young

Year 6 were joined by some of the Cheshire Phoenix players for a Hoops4Health workshop.

 

We discussed and designed a healthy meal option for the players, before discussing the negative health impacts of smoking before completing a basketball workshop. 

Into Film Festival, by Miss Young

Year 5 and 6 visited the Storyhouse to participate in the Into Film Festival. For many of us, it was our first time back in the cinema in almost 2 years. 

Electricity Workshop, by Miss Young

Year 6 received a visit from Ruth from Chemistry with Cabbage. However, this time we engaged with the Electricity Workshop. We tested out circuits, created our own human circuit and enjoyed the sounds of the buzzers for over 2 minutes.

Year 6 have learnt how to distinguish 5 types of trees found within school's grounds. They include:

Cherry

Ash

Rowan

Silver Birch

We then learnt how to safely make and light a fire before enjoying toasted marshmallows.

The children practised their verses in groups, considering their expression, intonation and pitch before performing the whole poem as a class.

Brooke and her Mum kindly brought her Grandpa Bill's DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross), OBE and other medals from his time serving King and country in WW2 as a Flight Lieutenant. 

Hot Seating, by Miss Young

As part of our English lessons, studying 'Star of Fear, Star of Hope' by Jo Hoestlandt we completed a role play activity using hot seating. The children wrote questions as Helen and Lydia to ask Mrs Keller (Madame Eleven O'Clock) before acting them out, considering body language, tone and appropriate answers. 

STEAM Festival, by Miss Young

Year 5 and 6 visited the Boat Museum for a fun packed day of STEAM workshops. Some of which, included: sufactants, telling the time with trees, pixel graphics and animation, magic of chemistry, bath bomb science, escape rooms and fun with physics.
