Light- Periscopes, by Miss Young

Year 6 mapped out the direction in which light travels (straight) in a persicope using our 4G pitch and skipping ropes to represent our mirrors angled at 45°, in order to reflect the light. We decorated our periscope nets before cutting, scoring and joining them. Finally we tested their effectiveness in seeing around corners and over tables.

We worked with some History students from Chester University this week. We were being historical detectives, investigating the past through artefacts.
Y5 Strawberry wellies, by Mrs Percival

Y5 have been planting strawberry plants in wellies for the quiet garden. We have drilled holes in the bottom of the wellies and cut them down a little. Now we are looking forward to some strawberries and cream before the end of term!

Wonder- English and transition resources.
These resources have been created to complete as your English tasks but also prepare you for the transition to secondary school.
The lessons are based on the book Wonder by R.J.Palacio and recordings of the book will be shared to accompany each lesson. If you have a copy at home, feel free to read along as the page numbers will be shared for each lesson.
WB 13th July
- engage with the reading and tasks from Lesson 9, 10 and 11 throughout this week if you can. Then enjoy the chance to celebrate yourself as a Wonder using the helmet outline as a guide to record what makes you a wonder. Y6 Transition, by Miss Young

BE AWESOME, GO BIG (BA, GB)- transition resources.
These resources have been created to prepare you for the transition to secondary school.
The lessons are based on the books You Are Awesome by Matthew Syed and Go Big by Matthew Burton, however you don't need copies to complete the sessions. You might remember I had started to read the 'Go Big' book in class and will continue to record myself doing so along with 'You are Awesome'.
Each session will take you through some big ideas to help you on your way to secondary school. You should work through each interactive lesson over 2-3 days, recording answers in the accompanying workbook- either for you to copy down into books, print and complete by hand, or type onto the PowerPoint version.
The transition tasks will replace our usual 'Other Tasks', however, you can always explore the 'Optional Tasks' gallery whenever you'd like to complete something more creative or in addition to the transition work. There is also a 'Getting Ready to Go Big' challenge grid you might like to engage with.
WB 29th June
- engage with the reading and tasks from Session 8 and 9 throughout this week. It could be useful to make notes on the chapters being read.

Cheshire Phoenix paid Year 5 and 6 a visit to deliver their 'Hoops for Health' workshop.
We were joined by 3 of the current Phoenix players and learnt the dangerous effects of smoking along with the need to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

Year 6 conducted a conscience alley activity around our class text 'The Day War Came'.
They considered why a lone refugee child might be feared and contrasted this with how she could be supported by the community.

Murray Lachlan Young and the Action Transport Team visited KS2 and delivered a fabulously funny assembly. Before Y5 and 6 created their own stories, with the help of Murray and Joe using juxtapositions as their inspiration.

During our Science unit on Light, we have created our own periscopes to investigate how light travels in straight lines and reflects off mirrors.

In table groups, we practised and performed an alphabet poem relating to WWII.
We aimed to alter the pitch, volume, intonation and pitch. We considered how sound effects and actions would also be effective in our performance.

During our English lesson, Y6 considered questions that they would like to ask the characters from our text. Through drama, the children then hot seated the appropriate character and provided their response.

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who have supported us at Oldfield over the year. Your time is appreciated. We enjoyed sharing Afternoon Tea with our volunteers this afternoon. A special thank you to our Year 6 pupils who waited on our volunteers and had a busy afternoon ensuring everyone was well supplied with refreshments. They did a fabulous job.

Thank you to everyone who supported our Sports Day this year. It was great to see and hear the support for all the children taking part, your cheers and claps were huge motivators! The weather was fabulous and a great day was had by all.
Thank you to those who supported the PTA by purchasing raffle tickets. There were some amazing prizes - our Year 6 pupils did a great job of writing letters to companies to encourage them to donate prizes. We raised a total of £216!
