The children have settled wonderfully into their new classroom and I have enjoyed getting to know them. We have enjoyed making Monster Book Eaters and using ink blowing to make new sketchbook covers. We have also done a hunt around the classroom to get to know where everything is kept.

Thank you to James Wyatt for leading our musical assembly this afternoon. Guitars and singers entertained us by performing a range of familiar pieces. What a talented group of musicians we have! They were inspirational.
We also really enjoyed listening to our Year 4 children celebrating their recent Roman topic with a fabulous Roman rap.
A special mention must go to Robert who mesmerised the whole school when he played a solo guitar piece.
James will continue to teach guitar tuition next year. He will also be running an after-school music club. More information will be given out in September.

Year 5 learn about conservation at Chester Zoo, by Mrs Bailey

Year 5 had a fabulous visit to Chester Zoo on Friday, increasing our understanding of how the zoo supports conservation.
A special thank you to Jonny, Calum, Izzy, Charlie, Eva and Emma for planning our route and leading us around the zoo. They built in time for us to make notes on the differing levels of risk animals are under which will support our work back in class this week.
As always, our Year 5 pupils were a credit to Oldfield with their exemplary behaviour and positive enthusiasm and engagement in the day. We all had a thoroughly enjoyable day.
3D shape building in year 3, by Miss Jones

In maths we have been looking at 3D shape. We used cocktail sticks and clay to make various 3D shapes. We talked about how shapes with curved edges wouldn't be possible to build using straight cocktail sticks. Then we labelled them and explained their properties. After, we used our shapes to solve shape riddles.

Year 4 Roman Bread!, by Mrs Hover

D&T Day
Year 4 had great fun today researching different types of bread, tasting bread, watching film clips about the different ingredients and the history of bread and most importantly, making bread!
Some of the children dipped their bread in olive oil like the Romans and some were brave enough to try 'Mixtura cum caseo', a dip with leek, lettuce, rocket, coriander, mint, white wine vinegar, parmesan and feta cheese and olive oil! A few children even liked it!!
We also had a 'Food Hygiene' quiz and we had three winning teams, 'The Quirky Croissants', 'Five Plaited Loaf' and 'The Baking Bros'! The other two teams were only one point behind.

We enjoyed watching the caterpillars and learned all about life cycles. We let our butterflies go so they can lay their eggs to make more caterpillars.
The symmetrical butterflies you did for homework are lovely and now they are all around our classroom. Well done everyone!

Art work inspired by The Hunter, by Mrs Bailey

Our year 5 children have been inspired by a book called The Hunter by Paul Geraghty. They used this to create some fabulous art work using a range of materials including inks, water colours, tissue paper, marker and sketching pencils. A huge thank you to Mrs Turnbull for her input and guidance.
Oldfield at the 2017 School Games , by Miss Jones

Congratulations to the gymnastics team who took part in the 2017 School Games today. They represented Chester in the team and individual gymnastics competition. The children had to perform a floor and body management routine, as well as a vault! They did really well and came away with team 3rd! The children also won the 'Spirit of the Games' award which was awarded to the school that showed the best determination, sportsmanship and respect during the day.
I was so incredibly proud of the team today and they should be very proud of themselves for what they have achieved.

How does water travel around a plant? Yr 3 science , by Miss Jones

Today we set up an experiment to see how water is transported around a plant. We put white roses in water with dye. Within an hour they had completely changed colour! This shows how the stem carries water to the rest of a plant. We decided it was like a straw. Check out the gallery to see the flowers change....
Year 4 Writing in the style of David Attenborough, by Mrs Hover

After watching some David Attenborough film clips, we used a similar style to describe the movements of the Water Horse on land, ice and eventually water as he is moved from the pond to the loch.

Year 3 have really enjoyed wearing their pyjamas and bringing their teddies to school today. This afternoon, we enjoyed watching Spy Kids 3 with popcorn and a hot chocolate.

Year 1 - Material madness, by Mrs Harrison

As sports day was cancelled due to the rain, Year 1 have had a fun filled day focusing on materials.
We learnt all about where paper came from and how it is made before designing and creating our own. We can not wait to see what it looks like once it has dried.
In the afternoon, we focused on using scientific vocabulary to describe the properties of different materials.
I wonder whether they can remember what our new words (transparent, opaque and absorbent) mean at home?

We had great fun today measuring and calculating the area of rectangular shapes before putting them together in the style of Piet Mondrian.
Interactive maths day at Bishop's High School, by Mrs Bailey

Eight of our Year 5 pupils represented Oldfield on Monday at an Interactive maths day held at Bishop's High School.
Everyone really enjoyed calculating measurements of various pyramid shapes and exploring Bishop's High School to solve word problems.
Their favourite part of the day was the Village Challenge. Each group was given a budget of £125 and had to use this to purchase materials for the village they were constructing. We were thrilled to see the Oldfield group working productively as a team, coming first in this challenge.
Thank you to Bishop's High School staff for coordinating the event. Our children had a great day and came back even more enthused about maths and about Bishop's.
Ness Gardens (year 3) more added, by Miss Jones

We have had a wonderful time at Ness Gardens today. We had a fabulous tour of the Gardens and even saw a banana tree! Afterwards, we dissected a flower and talked about each part's important role in pollination. We also searched for different species of bee and did a mini beast hunt. We found a young toad, baby frogs, earwigs, a mosquito, woodlice and spiders. When it was time for lunch, we enjoyed a picnic on the grass. In the afternoon, we had explored the Gardens further and even got a chance to play in the play area.
The children asked excellent questions today and listened brilliantly to our guide, Rose. She even commended the children on how much they already knew about plants. I was so proud of the children today and gave them all 2 stickers on their sticker charts.
Thank you you to Mrs Holmes, Mrs Ruston, Mrs Lloyd and Mrs Evans for coming along with us. Your support was really appreciated and we hope you enjoyed the Gardens as much as we did.

Hinduism in Year 5, by Mrs Bailey

Our Year 5 pupils have split themselves into five teams to research different aspects of Hinduism. They will then share their findings to the rest of the class.

Thank you to everyone who supported our fabulous Summer Fun Day on Friday. As always, it was very well supported by our families and enjoyed by all. It was lovely to welcome new Oldfield families to the event too.
