Geography
At Oldfield Primary School, our geography curriculum develops children's understanding of people, places, environments and the wider world. Through studying local, national and global geography, children build their geographical knowledge and skills, with learning carefully planned to build upon what they already know.
Our youngest children begin by exploring their immediate surroundings, weather, seasons and simple maps. As they progress through school, they extend their knowledge to the wider world, studying topics such as rainforests, settlements, volcanoes, rivers and climate change. Children learn to compare places and understand how people and the environment influence one another.
Throughout our curriculum, children revisit important geographical concepts, including location, settlements, climate and sustainability. Our local area, including Chester, Vicars Cross and the River Dee, provides meaningful opportunities for children to connect their learning to familiar places and develop an awareness of environmental issues.
Geographical enquiry and fieldwork are key to our approach. Children develop skills in using maps, atlases and digital mapping, asking questions, collecting information and drawing conclusions. These skills develop progressively, encouraging greater independence and geographical understanding.
Knowledge organisers support children's learning by identifying the key knowledge, vocabulary and fieldwork opportunities linked to each geography unit. They provide a clear reference point, helping children revisit important information, make connections between topics and apply their geographical understanding through practical investigations and fieldwork.
By the time children leave Oldfield, we aim for them to have the knowledge, skills and curiosity to become informed, responsible and globally aware citizens.
