Phonics

At Oldfield Primary School, we use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds phonics programme.

Our vision is that all children at Oldfield will be happy and confident learners, achieve their full potential and develop a love of learning. We understand the need for children to become fluent readers and develop a love for reading.

Please click to link below to find information about how to support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters. There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home.

Practicing Phonics at Home

The books that school sends home are matched to the phonics sounds your child is learning in school. Your child will have read the book in school at least three times with an adult and should be able to read to you independently.

They will also bring a book for 'shared reading' for you to share and read with your child. Make sure you set aside quiet time for reading and enjoying books together. This book is not for your child to read alone.

The Phonics Screening Check at Oldfield Primary School

During the Summer Term in Year 1, children across England take part in the national Phonics Screening Check. At Oldfield, we use this assessment to help identify how confidently children can apply their phonics knowledge when reading unfamiliar words.

The check consists of 40 words for children to read aloud to a familiar adult in a calm and supportive environment. Some of the words are real words and some are ‘alien’ or nonsense words, which encourage children to use their decoding and blending skills rather than relying on memory.

Parents and carers are informed of their child’s outcome in the end-of-year report, including whether they have met the national expected standard.

We are committed to ensuring that every child becomes a confident and fluent reader. If a child needs further support with phonics, we provide targeted ‘catch-up’ sessions in Year 2 to strengthen gaps in knowledge and build confidence. Additional support continues throughout Key Stage 2 where necessary, ensuring that all children are supported on their reading journey.
